They’re back! Backyard Musical, the Denver theatre company that produced 12 Angry Jurors and Big Fish, earlier this year, presents Anastasia: The Musical, the weekend of October 9 – 11 at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church.
Adapted from the 1997 animated Disney movie, Anastasia, the family friendly musical tells the legend of Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, rumored to have survived the execution of the Russian imperial family in 1917. Years later, Anya, a young girl with amnesia, is discovered who may be the missing heiress to the throne.
The musical, by celebrated Broadway artists Terrence McNally (playwright) and Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (music and lyrics), is studded with romance, comedy, and heart-tugging moments.
Zach Erhardt, who plays Dmitry, the musical’s romantic lead, notes that the work is especially suitable for family audiences. “The characters are fleshed out and well-developed,” he says. “It’s fun for kids but it has lessons for adults about how to weigh you future and your past, how to take the lessons from the past but move forward.”

Backyard Musical theatre company, a home-grown Denver company, was founded a few years ago by FOCUS campus ministers. The company is dedicated to highlighting the true, the good, and the beautiful through theatrical storytelling.
In its short life, the company has built a local following and mounted very successful, sold-out productions. Ross Lefort, a co-founder of Backyard Musical, directs Anastasia, his third musical for the company. He praises the cast and crew for making working on the production “pure fun.”
